About Me
Academic Biography
I am Dr. A. Bhargavi, a Community Medicine
physician with postgraduate training from
All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS),
Bhubaneswar. My academic journey—from MBBS through MD—has been defined by
a deep commitment to public health research, community
engagement, and evidence-based practice.
My research spans
adolescent health, maternal and child health, immunization,
and travel medicine. I have undertaken community-based mixed-methods research,
produced multiple peer-reviewed publications as first and
corresponding author, and delivered scientific presentations at
leading national conferences including YLNC, APCRICON, and
IAPSM.
I am currently serving as Senior Resident in
the Department of Community Medicine at Gayatri Vidya Parishad
Institute of Health Care and Medical Technology, Visakhapatnam,
where I contribute to undergraduate teaching, public health
research, and academic mentoring.
Fluent in English, Telugu, Hindi, and Odia, I
bring multilingual communication to community engagement across
diverse populations. I believe that rigorous science, contextual
sensitivity, and community partnership are the pillars of
meaningful public health impact.

The Community Called Me
Growing up in Andhra Pradesh, I witnessed firsthand how social
determinants — poverty, education, access — shape health
outcomes far more than clinical interventions ever could. That
realisation guided me to Community Medicine.

Science as a Tool for Equity
At AIIMS Bhubaneswar, I learned that rigorous evidence —
collected from the ground up, with communities as partners —
is the most powerful instrument for health equity. My thesis
on adolescent mental health in rural and urban Odisha was born
from this conviction.

From Data to Policy
Every publication, every conference presentation, every field
camp is a step toward translating research into action —
influencing national programmes like RBSK, RNTCP, and
adolescent health policies so they reach every last child and
family.

Teaching the Next Generation
As an educator, I believe that nurturing critical thinking in
medical students today builds the public health workforce that
will protect communities for decades to come.

Background & Rationale
Adolescence is a critical developmental stage where parenting
style significantly shapes mental health and behavioral outcomes.
Western literature links authoritative parenting with positive
outcomes, but these patterns may not translate to culturally
diverse Indian contexts where norms, gender roles, and rural-urban
differences play vital roles.
Objectives
Primary: Determine the association of parenting
style on mental well-being and substance use among adolescents.
Secondary:
Estimate prevalence of psychological distress and substance use;
study patterns of substance use with stratification by gender,
age, and location.
Methodology
Multistage sampling across rural (Tangi, Mendhasala) and urban
(Nayapalli, Ward 25/27/28/37) settings. Tools:
PSDQ-SF (parenting styles),
GHQ-12 (psychological distress, cut-off ≥3),
YRBS modules (substance use). Data analysed using
SPSS with chi-square bivariate tests and subgroup analyses.

This study applies the Tanahashi framework to analyse coverage gaps
in child health screening under the Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram
(RBSK) programme using national and state-level data from India. The
framework evaluates sequential coverage bottlenecks across
availability, accessibility, acceptability, contact, and effective
coverage to identify where the programme falls short in reaching
eligible children with quality screening services.
